Leading with experience: How Ben Tuerlings guides clients through Finance Transformation

11 March 2026

For Finance consultants who are curious, analytical and eager to help organizations improve their Finance operations, TriFinance provides an environment where they can make a real impact from day one.

When a major European security company decided it was time to modernize its Finance operations, TriFinance was asked to guide the journey. The organization, active across the BeNeLux and several European countries, had grown rapidly through acquisitions and organic expansion. Its Finance department, however, was struggling with manual work, unclear responsibilities and a lack of standardized processes, making it difficult to scale activities.

This is the kind of environment where consultants like Ben Tuerlings thrive. Ben has grown within TriFinance for more than 15 years, starting right after graduating from KU Leuven and evolving from consultant to Project Manager. His deep understanding of the finance function, built through years of hands-on consultancy work, now enables him to confidently lead transformation projects for clients.

A complex situation that needed clarity

The Finance team was dealing with recurring accounting errors, master data issues and a growing sense of frustration within the teams. Systems were not fully integrated, tasks were often duplicated and the team was split across two locations, which created inconsistencies in the way processes were executed.

Together with his Expert Practice Lead Vicky Posthumus and another Project Consultant, Ben helped shape a structured approach.

Initially, the TriFinance team and the client team jointly aligned on the key high-level challenges and defined several design principles for the desired future state. This first step helped create a shared understanding of the daily operational reality — including bottlenecks that had developed over time — as well as the ambition for the future.

The team continued by further mapping the current situation through workshops and interviews.

Based on these insights, the next step focused on designing the future state of the Finance organization and identifying the gaps between the current and the desired situation. This resulted in a clear target operating model, including a defined team structure and a roadmap to guide the organization through its transformation.

The main challenges identified within the Finance team were inefficiencies caused by incorrect data input from operational teams, a large volume of manual tasks, and unnecessary double validations and approvals. As a result, staff were often overloaded and had limited time available for value-adding activities such as analysis or business partnering.

Ben’s contribution to a future‑ready Finance Function

Ben played a central role in translating operational pain points into a coherent structure for the future. He helped design two versions of the (target) operating model, one for the mid‑to‑long term and one for the long term, allowing the organization to evolve gradually rather than through abrupt change.

These models clarified roles and responsibilities, aligned the organizational structure and provided a clear view of how processes such as Source‑to‑Pay, Record‑to‑Report and Order‑to‑Cash should function in the future. The roadmap offered practical guidance for implementation, starting with quick wins that could immediately reduce workload and improve efficiency.

The client chose TriFinance because of its pragmatic and people‑focused approach. Ben and the team worked closely with Finance, senior management and other business units to ensure that the transformation was grounded in reality and supported by everyone involved.

A defining experience for Ben

This project became a solid learning experience for Ben. He gained a broad view of how a Finance department operates and collaborates in general.

“I was immersed in Finance operations from day one. The helicopter view sparked my interest in diving deeper into the finance processes. And the feedback culture at TriFinance helped me grow fast.”  Ben Tuerlings

Ben often highlights the importance of feedback in his development. The project offered opportunities to reflect, adjust and grow, both technically and personally. It also allowed him to take on responsibilities independently while still benefiting from the support of his colleagues.
