From my personal experience in managing ERP implementation projects over the past 15+ years, I can say these are among the most challenging yet rewarding projects you can take up as a project manager.
These days, ERP implementation projects are rarely just about technology. Instead, they are real (digital) business transformations which have a significant impact on an organization’s operational processes. These projects touch the very heart of the business and are of great strategic importance.
In this article, I highlight six benefits of leading an ERP implementation project to your development as a project manager that, in my opinion, are the most important.
Benefit 1: It will broaden your business acumen
ERP implementations are not just about technology, they are predominantly about transforming the business, especially as companies are seeking to stick closer to the standard functionality that is offered by the software. As a project manager, you therefore need to work closely with stakeholders from the business to understand how the current processes run, learn about inefficiencies, and work towards solutions that create value.
By having this interaction in multiple projects, you will gain a thorough understanding of various industries and business operations. You will discover how different business functions interact and depend on one another, what the key processes are at different types of companies and how these are supported by IT solutions.
That will eventually help you to recommend best practices, streamline processes, and contribute to the overall strategic direction of the company. The fact that you are able to bridge the gap between technology and business will be crucial in achieving project success.
Benefit 2: It will strengthen your leadership skills
Leading an ERP implementation project requires strong leadership skills. Project managers lead cross-functional teams through complex changes. You will need to manage a diversity of stakeholders and coordinate departments with different needs, requiring you to delegate tasks effectively to the various people in your project team.
During an implementation process, you will inevitably have to resolve conflict and inspire a diverse team to reach common goals. To achieve this, you will need to hone your communication skills and emotional intelligence. These skills are crucial for understanding different perspectives, mediating disputes, and motivating team members.
As a PM, you will have to make key decisions under pressure as the timeline for ERP implementation projects is usually tight. Leading an ERP implementation will help you understand the specific challenges in each project phase (from project initiation to post-implementation activities) and teach you how to best tackle them to make the project a success.
ERP implementation projects will give you the opportunity to realize real business change and witness the positive effects of your work, such as improved process efficiency, reduced costs, and increased productivity.
Benefit 3: It will drive meaningful impact and change
ERP implementation projects have a real impact on an organization. An ERP system touches the core processes of the business. A high-performing system aligned to the business needs is essential to (strategic) business performance. Similarly an underperforming ERP system can significantly hamper the competitiveness and profitability of an organization.
Given the substantial impact on the business, these projects will give you the opportunity to realize real business change and witness the positive effects of your work, such as improved process efficiency, reduced costs, and increased productivity.
It is important to accurately assess the impact your project will have on the various teams and stakeholders. You will also have to determine the actions that are required to ensure the adoption of the new solution by the people in the organization. After all, the project is only a success if the solution is fully adopted by the people in the organization. Only in that case the full benefits of the project can be realized.
Benefit 4: It will be part of a wider digital transformation initiative
ERP implementations more often than not form a crucial part of a broader digital transformation initiative within an organization. Being involved in such a transformation allows you to contribute to the overall strategic vision of the company.
The digital transformation initiative that the ERP implementation is part of usually is a key strategic initiative for the customer’s organization and is therefore high on the agenda of the top leadership of the company.
This means that you will have frequent contact with C-suite executives and will need to both inform and actively manage their involvement as key stakeholders in the implementation project. Ensuring their endorsement and engagement as project champions is crucial for success.
You will get hands-on experience with cutting-edge ERP solutions, learning about their functionalities, integration points, and how they improve business efficiency, allowing you to add significant value in subsequent implementation projects
Benefit 5: It will expand your functional expertise
ERP systems are complex and cover a wide range of business processes, from finance and HR to supply chain and manufacturing. Leading an ERP implementation project provides you with extensive functional knowledge on how the software supports these processes.
You will get hands-on experience with cutting-edge ERP solutions, learning about their functionalities, integration points, and how they improve business efficiency. This expertise allows you to add significant value in subsequent implementation projects as you can go beyond the typical PM scope in these projects.
On top of this, you will gain knowledge of the wider ERP ecosystem of other business applications that interact and link with the core ERP system. This allows you to determine which business processes are best covered by the core ERP and where ecosystem software might be more appropriate.
Benefit 6: It will build stronger customer relationships
Successful ERP implementations are built on strong customer relationships. As a PM, you will be the primary point of contact, working closely with the business to ensure their needs are met and their expectations are exceeded.
At the same time you take up a challenging role to ensure the project stays within the initially defined scope. This role allows you to develop deep, trust-based relationships with key stakeholders, enhancing your networking skills and expanding your professional connections.
These relationships are crucial for the success of the project and typically extend beyond the project’s completion into long-term partnerships with the customer as continuous improvements are implemented.
Conclusion
In conclusion, being involved in ERP implementation projects, with their complexity and specific challenges, is both a valuable development opportunity for project managers and a very rewarding undertaking when delivered successfully.
These projects are usually part of a broader digital business transformation that significantly impacts an organization’s operations and strategic direction. Leading such projects allows Project managers to significantly broaden their business acumen, sharpen their leadership capabilities, and contribute to an organization’s strategic goals. Additionally, these projects offer the opportunity to drive meaningful organizational change, expand functional expertise, and cultivate strong, trust-based customer relationships.
