From bookkeeper to finance all-rounder: Nicolas’ growth story at TriFinance

15 May 2025

Five years ago, Nicolas Ransy decided to leave his job at an accounting firm to start a new chapter as a finance consultant at TriFinance. At the time, he was a generalist bookkeeper with two years of experience, eager for more variety and new work environments.

Today, he has built up a diverse track record, ranging from GL Bookkeeper to Capex Controller, with assignments in financial analysis and controlling. A look back at a career shaped by variety, continuous growth, and personalized support.

Breaking the routine, without compromising on profundity

As a bookkeeper at a fiduciary, Nicolas managed a client portfolio with care, but the repetitiveness started to take its toll.

“The deadlines came around each year: VAT returns, closings, balance sheets… It was all very cyclical, and I felt the need for change”, he explains.

As a consultant, he now explores new business environments while still being fully immersed in the finance department, just like in an internal role. Each assignment is an opportunity to integrate into a team, discover new work methods, and make a meaningful contribution in a challenging environment.

“What I love is that each assignment forces me to adapt; never superficially, though. You really dive into the company.”

Expanding your skills, continuously

When Nicolas joined TriFinance, he hadn’t expected how much his field of expertise would broaden. Over time, he discovered new tools (SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, Adfinity, Oracle, Odoo, Tableau, etc.) and developed a broader understanding of corporate finance.

“Each assignment was an opportunity to explore a new role or tool. In five years, I’ve learned much more than I ever thought possible in an internal role,” he says.

Varied projects as drivers of growth

Since joining TriFinance, Nicolas has worked on a variety of projects across sectors, each offering its own learning opportunities:

  • GL Bookkeeper at a healthy fast-food chainsupported the team during closings, stock analysis and a software transition; his first exposure to ERP in an operational context.

  • Financial Analyst at an international payment providercontributed to credit risk assessments, daily cash flow monitoring, and reconciliation processes, strengthening his analytical skills and English communication.

  • Pricing Analyst at a major retailerhelped adjust weekly prices and reported on margins, gaining insight into the financial impact of commercial decisions.

  • GL Bookkeeper at a B2B company in the movie industry: managed the full bookkeeping process for a foreign entity, focusing on VAT, closings, and customer/supplier operations.

  • GL & Project Controller at a maritime engineering firm: supported financial closings, VAT complexities and project budgeting, working closely with project managers.

  • Capex Controller at an industrial companyhelped monitor investments, monthly closings, and liaised with international production sites.

Thanks to the variety of projects, I was able to gradually expand my role from bookkeeping into controlling.

Step by step towards more responsibility

In five years, Nicolas has taken significant steps in both responsibility and complexity.

“In the beginning, I focused on booking entries. Today, I discuss budgets, analyse variances, and contribute to monthly closings, allowing for a broader view of how the business operates.”

This growth happened naturally, driven by increasingly complex projects and the active support of BaseCamp, TriFinance’s internal team that guides consultants in their development.

With mentoring and regular feedback from BaseCamp, I was able to build a career path that evolved logically, step by step; and most importantly, aligned with my ambitions.

Professional growth without sacrificing personal life

Far from the stereotype of the overworked consultant, Nicolas highlights the balance he has been able to maintain.

“I’m training for a marathon, I help with the family business’ bookkeeping… and I’ve never had to give that up for a project,” he says.

Even during peak times like closings or reporting, he manages to safeguard his personal time. This flexibility is made possible by open conversations with BaseCamp, mentoring and technical support when needed, and an organization that truly values well-being. That’s why TriFinance was recently recognized as a Best Workplace.
